Dolphins on Bonaire: Where to Spot Them from Your Rental Boat

Bonaire boat rental

There are few things on Bonaire that beat the moment a pod of dolphins shows up next to your boat. One minute you are cruising along the coast, the next you spot a fin, then another, and suddenly you are surrounded by a group of dolphins playing in your wake. It is the kind of moment people talk about for the rest of their holiday.

The good news: Bonaire is one of the best places in the southern Caribbean to spot dolphins in the wild. The even better news? You don't need a guide, a big tour or a captain's license to find them. With one of our rental boats you can head out yourself and have a real chance of running into them.

In this guide we share which dolphins live around Bonaire, where you have the best chance of seeing them, and how to behave around them so everyone, including the dolphins, has a great day.

Which dolphins live around Bonaire?

Two species show up most often along the coast of Bonaire:

  • Bottlenose dolphins are the classic dolphin you probably picture: stocky, grey, curious and often swimming in small groups close to shore. They are the most common species you will see around Bonaire.
  • Spinner dolphins are smaller, slimmer and famous for the acrobatic spinning jumps they make out of the water. They usually travel in bigger pods and tend to stay a bit further offshore.

Both species are wild and free. They come and go as they please, which means there is never a guarantee, but on Bonaire the chances are actually pretty solid if you pick the right spot and the right time.

The best spots to see dolphins from your boat

Most dolphin sightings on Bonaire happen along the western, leeward coast. The water there is calmer, deeper just offshore, and full of fish, which is exactly what dolphins are looking for.

1. The channel between Bonaire and Klein Bonaire
This is the area where guests spot dolphins most often. The stretch of water between Kralendijk and Klein Bonaire is a natural highway for them. Sail across slowly, keep your eyes on the horizon and look for splashes or fins breaking the surface.

2. South of Kralendijk, near Punt Vierkant
Heading south from Kralendijk towards Punt Vierkant, the water gets deeper close to the shore and bottlenose dolphins regularly hunt here in the morning. Punt Vierkant is as far south as you can go by boat, so keep your exploring to the stretch between town and the point. Take it easy, keep your engine quiet and scan the water in front of you.

3. North of Harbour Village Marina
On calm days the coastline north of the marina, around the Andrea moorings, can be beautiful for spotting them. Bonus: this side of the island also offers some of the best snorkelling, so if the dolphins don't show up, your day is still made.

When is the best time of day?

Early morning is gold. The wind is usually low, the water is glassy and the dolphins are actively hunting. Leaving Harbour Village Marina around 9:00, our standard start time, puts you on the water at exactly the right moment.

Late afternoon is a second window. The light becomes softer, the heat drops and you sometimes see groups of dolphins on the move again. A half-day rental starting at 13:00 fits this window perfectly.

How to behave around dolphins (the right way)

Dolphins around Bonaire are part of the protected Bonaire Marine Park. They are wild animals, not entertainment. The rule of thumb is simple: let them come to you, never the other way around.

  • Keep your distance. Stay at least 50 metres away. If they want to come closer, that is their choice.
  • Slow down or idle your engine. Sudden speed changes or chasing them is stressful and not allowed.
  • Never jump in to swim with them. Swimming with wild dolphins is forbidden in Bonaire's marine park.
  • No feeding, no touching. Ever. It changes their natural behaviour and harms the pod.
  • If they ride your bow wave, enjoy it. Just hold your course at a steady speed and don't swerve.

Get this right and the encounter is unforgettable, for you and for them.
